Sarah Vaughan in HI-FI

Sarah Vaughan is one of our true treasures. Like many artists of the time her output is spread among many labels and tracking down a concise vision of her as an evolving and maturing jazz vocalist can be tough to do. This disc makes a great starting place, capturing Vaughan early in her career around 1950 and she already sounds unmistakable. She weaves each line she sings like a single thread of an ever more entrancing web and the band, including Miles Davis, plays with elegance and grace. The over all sound of this record pairs equally well with late nights or early mornings. Her 1954 self titled record made with the other great hard-bop era trumpeter Clifford Brown is a gem as well.
